A bachelor troop is an all-male troop of monkeys. Male rhesus macaques generally leave their natal troops (or are forced to leave) around the age of 4. This helps prevent inbreeding.
These young males often form bachelor troops to help each other survive. Some monkeys stay in their bachelor troops their whole lives, while others are accepted into larger troops, generally as high-ranking males.
Some male monkeys never join bachelor troops, choosing (or being forced) to live on their own as drifters.
